My observation:
If you have a cat: your life revolves around the cat. You have a cat because you want a self-sufficient pet. But you inevitably will spend much time trying to make the cat into a cuddly, snuggly little baby that will want to curl up in your lap, sleep under the covers with you, etc.
If you have a dog: your dog's life revolves around you. He cannot function without your help. You have a dog because you want someone to love you as much as you love him.
Contrary to cats, dogs love you no matter what. They love you as much as you love them at least. You can love a cat all you want but in the end he will only love you enough to get what he wants.
Cat people spend their time trying to turn their kitties into doggies, and dog people spend their time turning their doggies into children.

Haha. I have dogs because they actually interact. They also serve a practical purpose 1) when someone is in your house that isn't supposed to be, 2)when hunting for fowl, rabbits, foxes, or other small game, 3) rescue operations, 4) seeing eye dogs, and 5) drug/bomb/firearm/cancer detection using their astute olfactory organs (some are even employed for clearing mine fields because of their low body weight, small area in contact with the ground, and the ability to detect explosives).
Definitely the more practical of the two.
My mom's cat is fairly effective at attacking people.
I told you he put a hole through my thumbnail at Christmas. It's only about half grown out now.
Oh yeah, I forgot to add "Cats are evil creatures." Slight oversight.
I don't put up with behavior like that from a pet. A dog you can train to behave, a cat you just get rid of. And I would if it kept that up.
Um, but Chewie loves me more than life itself....
Chewie is the exception to the rule :)
